Health Insurance BC (Medical Services Plan of BC or MSP) strongly advises that you purchase additional travel insurance when travelling outside of the province, whether in Canada or outside the country - even if you plan to be away for only a day.

Emergency in-patient hospital care often exceeds $1000 a day and can be as high as $10,000 a day in intensive care in the US.  MSP does not subsize fees charged for ambulance service obtained outside B.C. If you require ambulance service in another province or outside Canada, fees can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars. Furthermore, accommodation and flight costs for visiting friends or relatives while you are in the hospital are common and unexpected costs by people who have an accident or illness while travelling.
